Who we are & what we do

NHS North Somerset is one of eleven primary care trusts within NHS South West (the South West Strategic Health Authority). Formed on 1 July 2006, the new organisation replaces the three old Strategic Health Authorities (Avon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire; Dorset and Somerset; and the South West Peninsula). NHS South West oversees the largest region in England – stretching from Land’s End to Tewkesbury, with a total population of over five million.

North Somerset is a largely rural area covering about 145 square miles. In 2008 North Somerset has an estimated population of 205,500 who mainly live in the coastal towns of Weston-super-Mare (40%), Clevedon and Portishead, and the small market town of Nailsea (30%). The PCT was established on 1 April 2002 in line with the objectives of the White Paper ‘Shifting the Balance of Power’.

The PCT has as its core role the provision and development of primary and community based services. The PCT, as the organisation specifically responsible for health care provision for the North Somerset population, aims to pull together all the elements of NHS services provided or required for the population of the area. The main vehicle for pulling together community development, primary and community care and acute care is through the establishment of programmes and care pathways focusing on each individual major set of illnesses, injuries or health problems.

The PCT also places considerable emphasis on the need to support and strengthen the bedrock of its services, that is primary and community care. In order to do this the PCT has recognised the need to develop updated and, where feasible, purpose built premises, for the delivery of the full range of primary and community services needed to allow for the provision of a comprehensive range of modern healthcare services.

In common with all primary care trusts, NHS North Somerset is an independent NHS organisation with responsibility for

In carrying out these core functions, NHS North Somerset is committed to ensuring the delivery of the best possible care for the population of North Somerset within the resources available and in the wider context of others in the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors.
